Depicting the Leeds-Carlisle Royal Mail Coach Outside The Bush Hotel

English, Signed "R Harrington" and Dated "1848"
The name "HAMILTONS" is shown carved into the stonework of the stable archway, behind the coach. James Hamilton was the Landlord of The Bush Hotel and Posting and Commercial House, on English Street, Carlilse, from 1842 until 1846 and it was referred to as "Mr. Hamilton's, Bush Inn".
The Carlisle Journal reports in 1846 that "Twenty Four Mail and Stage Coaches arrive and are dispatched from the city of Carlisle daily, all of which alternately visit the Bush Hotel". The route this coach travelled to Carlisle was from the Bull in Mouth, Leeds, via High Harrowgate, Rippon, Leming-Lane, Caterick-Bridge, Greata-Bridge, Brough, Appleby and Penrith.
