Solid Ash and Elm with Traces of Historic Painted Surface

A delightful classic primitive comb backed Windsor of great natural charm and character. The wide elm plank seat is supported by four turned legs joined by “H” stretchers, the front two of which have some delightful stylised baluster turned details. The generous horseshoe form arm bow is raised on multiple and closely fitted turned spindles, the central rear one and two front arm rest supports being larger and decoratively turned. The slightly winged comb back is raised on seven turned spindles. Many of the spindles which are made of ash and would have been turned when “green” have moved and contorted slightly to create engaging lines. The large plank seat has a large shrinkage down the middle, along the grain as one would expect and the whole piece benefits from a really good original aged colour and patination. This would originally have been made as a humble, functional working chair, which has survived to tell its story, recommend the skill and artistry of its maker and sit comfortably in today’s world.
