John Miles is one of the most celebrated English 19th Century Naive School animal portrait painters and is particularly renowned for several depictions of Adam naming the animals. He was born and worked in the Cotsworlds all his life and his work has a striking individuality and bold naive quality. The present example is closely similar in composition to "A Prize Hereford Cow", dated 1842 and held in the collection of Cheltenham Art Galleries and Museums.
